Indiana Newspapers won a victory when a Senate committee voted to kill a bill that could have shifted publication of government public notices to a state website, depriving the publications of revenue.
In a major change, House Bill 1312 had specified that publishing of the notices in newspapers would now be optional, according to The (Franklin) Daily Journal.
But senators in the Senate Local Government Committee voted 8-2 against the bill.
Amelia McClure, executive director of the Hoosier State Press Association, sent an email to members saying the vote is fantastic news for Indiana’s newspapers.
The bill’s language cannot be brought back in an amendment or a conference committee, The (Franklin) Daily Journal reports.
